Artificial insemination, also known as intrauterine insemination, has proven to be a safe, effective method of assisted reproduction for many couples. Couples experiencing minimal male factor infertility, women with cervical mucus problems, and those experiencing unexplained infertility have found success.
How it Works
This process involves the external collection of spermatozoa in order to help couples conceive. Before treatment, the doctor will test the patient for any issues such as structural problems, hormonal imbalance or an infection. Once a surge of natural hormones is detected, either during ovulation or after a hormone injection, insemination will typically be performed within 24-36 hours. There are several ways of prediction ovulation, including an ultrasound, a urine test kit or a blood test.
If the patient chooses to use the partner’s sperm in an attempt to conceive, a sample will be supplied and then prepared for artificial insemination. The sample will be cleansed of any material that could cause a reaction in the uterus. In some instances, donor sperm may be used.
Artificial insemination is sometimes used in conjunction with gonadotropins, clomophine citrate, or other ovulatory medications. Once your doctor injects an ovulation drug during an artificial insemination cycle, you will then be monitored on a regular basis with ultrasounds and blood tests. The tests will indicate when eggs have matured and the time is right for an additional injection.
The procedure can be done relatively quickly in the doctor’s office, and no anesthesia is needed. Some patient may report mild discomfort, although in most cases there is no pain associated with the procedure.
