There are many ways that fertility preservation can help couples who have difficulty with infertility issues. By preserving healthy fertility building blocks for future use, DFW Center for Fertility & IVF can provide effective, safe treatment.
Male Fertility Preservation
Men who want to preserve their reproductive capabilities for the future have several options. They may want to guard against a disabling condition or a disease that could rob them of their ability to father children. Testicular sperm extraction and sperm banking are just two of the ways that an Allen fertility specialist can help. Speak with a doctor to see which option may be the best for you.
Female Fertility Preservation
Women can also help protect their ability to have a child at a later date through fertility preservation. Many women who are preparing for cancer treatment, for example, choose to take action in order to guard against potential infertility. Your doctor can provide several options to preserve eggs and minimize damage to the reproductive system. These treatments include:
- Embryo freezing – This is a procedure where eggs are harvested from the ovaries, fertilized through in vitro fertilization, and then frozen and stored. It typically involves daily injection of hormones at the beginning of the menstrual cycle to stimulate the ovaries and increase the chances of being able to collect multiple eggs. The mature eggs are then combined with sperm (either provided by the patient’s partner or a sperm donor) and then frozen.
- Egg freezing – Similar to embryo freezing, egg freezing also involves an injection to cause ovary stimulation, and then egg harvesting and freezing.
- Ovarian transposition – This is a procedure that helps protect the ovaries of women who are going to have radiation therapy to treat cancer. The ovaries are repositioned as far as possible away from the radiation field.
Other options include ovarian suppression, ovarian tissue freezing, fertility-sparing surgery and ovarian shielding.
