There’s No Need to be Nervous
Many people who come into our office to see a fertility physician for the first time are extremely nervous and anxious. But there’s no need to feel that way at all. If you are getting ready for your first visit, here’s some information that will hopefully put your mind at ease.
What to Expect
Before you see the fertility physician, a staff member will likely go over your insurance information with you so that we know which services will be covered and which ones won’t. Then, you’ll sit down with the doctor in a relaxed atmosphere for about an hour or so. You’ll talk about your medical history and any previous attempts at pregnancy you and your partner have tried. The doctor will then discuss general causes of infertility before going into your specific problem.
Once your fertility physician fully understands all of the contributing factors to your issue and go over prior tests, the doctor will then explain whatever further testing may be necessary. This may involve semen testing, blood work to assess the quality of a woman’s eggs, and maybe a dye study or ultrasound to check the fallopian tubes. Then, using your medical history and previous test results, the doctor will then provide you some general information on potential treatments.
Test Results
You’ll be asked to come in for a return visit once your test results are available. This will be the time that your doctor will discuss specific treatment alternatives to address your issue. There will be a wide range of options, of course: you may be prescribed mild fertility medications and be monitored with ultrasound equipment, or you may be better off undergoing in vitro fertilization or intrauterine insemination. Whatever the preferred option may be, your doctor will provide you a full, detailed explanation of what it involves and the results that you may expect.
