Tubal Blockages and Infertility

tubal_ligation.cropIn many instances, tubal blockages can lead to infertility because the developing embryo cannot make its journey to the uterine cavity. However, there are ways to treat this problem very effectively. Here is some information on why this problem occurs, and some of the potential treatment options.

The Fallopian Tubes

The fallopian tubes are incredibly important components to a woman’s ability to become pregnant. These tubes are located on either side of the uterus, starting at the uterine cavity and ending near the ovaries. Their main function is to capture an egg so it can be fertilized. Once an embryo has been fertilized with sperm, it must then move through the fallopian tubes to enter the uterine cavity, where it will implant. Tubal blockages, of course, will interfere with this process.

What causes Tubal Blockage?

Tubal blockages can have several different causes. For instance, scarring due to endometriosis can cause an obstruction, as can scarring due to any previous pelvic or abdominal surgeries. Infections can also lead to blockages, such as sexually transmitted infections such as gonorrhea, chlamydia or pelvic inflammatory disease.

Tubal Blockage Treatment

When you visit the DFW Center for Fertility and IVF, your doctor will perform a thorough examination to determine the cause of your problem. We will go over your complete medical history, and the recommend the best treatment option once we determine the reason for the blockage. In some instances, laparoscopic surgery will be the best course of action in order to possibly re-open your tubes to allow conception to occur naturally. If that is not a viable option, however, then we may recommend in vitro fertilization.
