Surgical Options for Infertility

infertilityJust as there are many different factors that can contribute to infertility, there are also many treatment options to address the problem. In some instances, medications or lifestyle changes may work. In others, a surgical procedure may be needed. These are just a few of the surgical procedures that have proven to be effective.

Hysteroscopy

A hysteroscopy involves the use of a camera, fiber optic light and a small telescope that allow a doctor to get a clear view of the uterus. A device called a hysteroscope is inserted through the cervix and vagina into the womb so the doctor can perform a thorough examination. The hysteroscopy may reveal certain uterine abnormalities, such as adenomyosis, uterine fibroids or Asherman’s Syndrome, that could be contributing to  infertility.

Laparoscopy

Laparoscopic surgery may be used to evaluate the fallopian tubes and possibly reopen them so that natural conception is once again possible. If the tubes cannot be repaired, then in vitro fertilization may be used to bypass the tubes. This form of surgery can also uncover conditions that may be causing tubal blockage, such as endometriosis or a sexually transmitted infection.

Fertility Preservation Procedures

There are several options for both men and women to preserve their ability to conceive in the future. These include testicular sperm extraction for men and fertility-sparing surgery for women.
