Is an SHG Test Right for You?

SHG TestSHG test can be an invaluable tool to a fertility doctor, providing a clear view of the uterine cavity as well as the uterus. It can help your doctor find the cause of many potential factors that are causing pregnancy complications, such as abnormal bleeding and others.

How SHG Testing Works

The SHG test is typically performed in the first cycle after menstruation occurs. The doctor will infuse sterile saline into the patient’s uterine cavity while taking images through ultrasound. The SHG test typically consists of inserting a thin ultrasound wand (the tip of which is coated by gel) as well as a narrow catheter into the uterine cavity through the cervix. The injection of the saline solution helps to provide an outline of the cavity and reveal intra-cavity fibroids, endometrial polyps or any other potential abnormalities.

Benefits of the SHG Test

There are several advantages to using the SHG test. For example, it is very cost effective, does not require the use of radiation, and can be conveniently performed in the doctor’s office. These are just a few of the problems the test can reveal:

  • Abnormal bleeding of the uterus
  • Congenital issues
  • Evaluation of the uterine cavity before and after any surgical procedure
  • Infertility
  • Potential adhesions, or scar tissue, in the uterine

As effective as an SHG test is, however, it does not show how the fallopian tubes are functioning. If your doctor suspects an issue with the tubes, then a different type of test will likely be recommended.
