Hysterosalpingogram – What to Expect

HysterosalpingogramA hysterosalpingogram is a fertility test that analyzes the health of the uterus as well as the fallopian tubes. It involves the use of an X-ray to get a picture of the interior of the tubes and uterus, as well as the surrounding areas. If a woman is having a difficult time achieving pregnancy, this is a test that can go a long way toward revealing the reason. Here is some information on what you can expect if you are preparing for this type of test.

Why a Hysterosalpingogram is Needed

Your doctor will likely recommend that you undergo a hysterosalpingogram if there is any reason to suspect you may have a blocked fallopian tube. It is also performed when a woman is experiencing problems with her uterus, such as adhesions or fibroids. The test will be needed if the uterus is shaped abnormally or if there is a possibility there may be some type of foreign object inside.

How it Works

If you have scheduled an appointment for a hysterosalpingogram, you can expect it to only last about five minutes or so. First, your doctor will inject a contrast material, or dye, into your uterus through a thin tube. The day will then go into the fallopian tubes. As the dye spreads, pictures will be taken. The images will provide your doctor with a great deal of information. For example, they can show whether or not there is any sort of blockage in the fallopian tubes that will keep an egg from being able to enter the uterus.

It will be important that the test is performed a few days following your menstrual period to ensure you are not pregnant. It should also be done before the next month’s ovulation to reduce the chance for any potential complications involving radiation.
