Artificial Insemination For Couples in DFW

Couples who struggle with infertility often turned to artificial insemination, which is the most affordable and has the best chance for success. However, there are some conditions that prevent artificial insemination for couples such as:

  • Severe endometriosis
  • Reduced sperm or egg quality
  • Severe damage of blockage of the fallopian tubes
  • Unreceptive cervical mucus

Artificial InseminationWomen who suffer from unreceptive cervical mucus, also commonly known as a “hostile cervix” prevents the sperm from entering the fallopian tubes and eventually the uterus. The cervical mucus is too thick to allow the sperm to penetrate the mucus therefore, pregnancy does not occur.

Procedure

Artificial insemination is a fairly easy procedure that can help treat some types of infertility in both women and men. During the procedure, sperm is introduced directly into the cervix, fallopian tubes, or the uterus. The procedure allows a shorter distance for the sperm to travel and avoid any obstructions. When couples have tried the cervical insemination which allows the egg to natural be fertilized in the fallopian tubes and the procedure is unsuccessful, the next step is Intrauterine insemination, where the sperm is placed directly inside the uterus.

What to Expect During the Procedure

When ovulation begins, the man provides the sperm in a collection cup. The sperm is then “washed and processed” and put in a catheter (a thin tube.) The catheter is placed inside the vagina then the sperm is introduced into the cervix and then the uterus, it gradually is released from the tube as it travels to the uterus. If the sperm is going to be released in the uterus the catheter holds all of the sperm until it reaches the uterus, then it is slow released. Artificial insemination is relatively painless and many women describe it as a similar feeling of having a pap smear done.

Some women may experience mild cramping during the procedure and slight bleeding afterward. Your doctor will most likely keep you in the office for 15 minutes to an hour to let the sperm begin to work, then you can go back to your regular activities.
